Exploring Colonial Botany & Migration | Futures Hub Residency Open Day

On February 27, I concluded my research residency at Futures Hub with an open day, inviting visitors into my mind factory “A Body of Past and Future”. Together, we traced the migration history of the Huái Shù (Japanese Pagoda Tree), a species introduced to Europe through colonial trade, and explored its parallels with human displacement—including my aunt’s journey as a Vietnamese contract worker in the GDR. Through interactive discussions, archival research, and digital simulations, we reflected on how trees, like people, carry hidden histories.

My warmest thanks to Futures Photography for having me over a month at their beautiful space. Thanks to Menno Liauw, Kim Boske, Anna Bulgarelli, Elena Lorenzi and Thomas for helping me during the residency. It was a memorable time for me in Amsterdam.
